Should one slow down the current while giant danios sleep?

No, if they are sleeping they must be happy.

I had power heads on timers in some tanks so the fish had a few hours of high water movement and the rest of the time it was calmer.

Fish do need to be able to rest and if there is a constant strong current, they use up a lot of energy constantly swimming.
