Hi,
in my new 80 gallon setup i am going to place some slate in it. I was just wondering if there is anything else i should do besides boiling it??

thank you

I am about as far from an expert as you can get............ ;)

......but slate can be as sharp as glass (almost), so as I scrubbed ours, I ran my fingers over it all (not recommended that you do exactly this of course) to ensure that there were no really sharp bits.... :)

I boiled it for about an hour, scrubbed it down really well, then boiled it again. I have slate in two of my tanks, and this method has worked for me so far.

Thing is, I'm a bit of a crazy person when it comes to keeping my tanks and the things in it super clean, so I may be going a bit overboard. :*) But do I care? Not at all! :p :D

rememner make sure that u put the slate in cold water and then boil slowly as u don't wanna crack it. the sudden temp change might crack it and u won't have 1 bit of slate but u might have loads more.

If not sure use a general treatment at about 3 times the recomented doseage

I went a little overboard when adding slate to my tanks. Found the slate at a local waterfall.
Brought it home, boiled it, then soaked it for a week in water taken from my tank. Checked all the level after to assure myself it was going to cause issues :)
