One of my Mollies has had fungal growths for a few days now which I've been treating with King British fungicide. It has not really had much of an effect. The fungus on the tail has reduced but further growths are emerging elswhere. Today I've noticed that there is a red patch on the operculum and the gills look white and enlarged.

It doen't help that the tank is not fully cycled. Ammonia is 0 but Nitrite is still 2 (nitrate 5). Obviously performing water changes is couter productive in terms of the fungal treatment but at the same time I'm very aware of the damaging effect nitrite can have at this level.

What's the best thing to do?

Keep dosing with fungicide and hope for the best or what?

Perhaps a partial water change to get rid of some of the spores, adding some aquarium salt and use the med's as per the instructions? I have a feeling mollies need some aquarium salt in the tank anyway. I'm sure someone will be along shortly to give better advice. Have you looked at the pinned advice on the livebrearers section?

ditto fenwoman, you must get the salt in there as soon as possible, one tablespoon per 5 gallons, but i would do a large water change of 50% first. mollies like the addition of salt and it will help with the high nitrite. what other fish have you got

I have some neons, will they be able to tolerate the salt? Also what type of salt?

You can buy aquarium salt at your lfs, however, I've heard you can also use non-iodized table salt, although the quantity to add may differ. Here's hoping your molly pulls through!
