My male sword has been staying in the corner of the tank and has lost all it's colour, he hasn't eaten for the last couple of days and today I've noticed he has a cotton wool like substance on his right fin and the tip of his tail.

He also has a hole in the middle of is dorsal fin.

Can anyone help and will this affect the rest of this fish in the tank??

Thanks

Lis

Could you give us more info, such as what other fish, size of tank, filtration, how long has it been running, any new additions lately, Tests for ph, ammonia, nitrites, nitrates and whay your cleaning regime is?

The tank is 180ltr with the standard Juwel filtration system and has been running since July. All tests were normal with a ph of 7. 10% water changes done every week.

I have
1 betta
4 minnows
4 zebra danios
1 female platy
2 pearl gourami
2 blue dwarf gourami (only added 2 weeks ago)
2 swords

All the fish apart from the blue gourami and swords (were added end Aug) were in my old tank and then transferred to the new tank in July.

Any help is much appreciated.

If you can try and seperate him in another tank as it sounds like he has fungus with a secondary bacterial attack.
Do more in the way of water changes to keep the bacteria count down. I would start by doing 30% twice a week just now with gravel cleaning as well.
Juwels are good for the bacterial colony but not for tank turnover so doing more water changes will be needed or add another small filter.
For the sick fish, if you can isolate him then using salt will help the fungus so salt a spare tank with 1 level teaspoon of tonic salt per gallon and then again 12 hours later to give you .2%. Leave it like that for a week or so to see if he gets any better. Try to get him eating by offering a small bit of live food such as bloodworm, but i'm hoping with the salt he may feel better enough to eat in a day or two.

The main tank might already be infected with spores as the symptoms started a couple days ago. Add a weak dosage of anti-fungus to the main tank and reduce feeding for a few days to prevent the fungus from seeking refuge on un-eaten food as some types do, fungi are very adaptive.

Hi

Thanks for your help with this.

The sword died last night. I was worried about the whole tank being infected so I have treated it with a dosage of anti-fungus and will reduce the feeding over the next couple of days as suggested.

Thanks again.
