I just added a 2" shrimp to my tank a few nights ago and I'm just wondering if they can change color a little bit to look like their surroundings...or if something else is going on.

He was a brownish color when I got him, but now he hangs out around/under a red and white rock I have. His color has turned much more red, and he's got a white spot on one of his side (about a cm in diameter).

Anyone know if this is normal?

Thanks,

wow i wish my lfs sold cherry shrimp thier much cooler than normal clearish brown shrimp

No, I believe it's called a bamboo shrimp.

One more question while we're at it....do shrimp like to be alone or with friends?

Thanks for all the help,

Anyone?

Also, shrimp don't really like light do they. He always hides during the day, the only time I ever see him is in the morning when I first turn on the lights.

Bamboo shrimp don't seem to mind or care if they have friends or not. They don't hang out together.
They shed their skin quite often, so once in a while you might see what looks like a dead shrimp with the entire outer shell (legs, feelers the whole lot) - opaque in color. Once they've shed their skin, they are always brighter.

Yes, they are nocturnal creatures and appreciate some live plants in the tank.

Here is a profile of them :)
