Hey guys,

I am beginning to set up my old 10 gallon tank for in my living room, I understand the cycling process but am having an extremely hard time finding ammonia. I still have a few places to check so I will repot back once I have or don't have ammonia.

My current question is, when I had this tank lack hooked up it was for raising my red bellied toads ( way less picky then fish ) but I'm worried the filter will need to be replaced. Do you think it would be safe to use this filter that was previously used for frogs? Or would the bacteria harm the fish. Until I get a definite answer I will run the filter but rinse it first.

Thanks for the help

I don't think you'd have a problem? The filter will be used to convert ammonia to the other stuff, but if you wanted to be safe I would wash and make sure you clean the filter before using.

Yea you really shouldnt have problems just wash it out reall well. Another option instead of ammonia is to use fish food. Its a bit more messy but it can be done.

Check to make sure the ammonia doesn't have any surfactant (detergent) in it. That will be toxic to fish.
