Just a quick question to see how much it costs to set up a small tropical-marine shop in the uk... a ballpark figure would be cool, experienced answers and educated guesses are both welcome. I have an idea but would like the thoughts of others here, thanks in advance, bex.

It would be worth asking your local council about rates, and clearly obtaining a license. You should find unit rental prices easy to come by and of course public liability insurance won't be hard to get a quote on. The rest is about stock and financial viability. Be interested to see what you come up with further.

Agree with above - youre gonna have to contact the council in the area you wanna setup in.

There are some silly prices out there tho so be warned about the shock! For example it is actually more expensive to run a shop (council fees, maintainance fees, insurance etc) in Harlow town centre, than in the middle of Londons shopping district (e.g. oxford street!)

it would cost loads, best off looking into it properly rather than asking on a forum.

my guess would be over £50k

you have the license
the land/shop
Buy all the tanks (depends how many you want need)
Plumbing to link the tanks and sumps up
Lighting for all the tanks
Stock for the shop (if your looking into marines, you would probably stock a few different brand skimmers, ro water unit etc)
Stock the tanks

might be worth lookg at this shop on ebay, probably bigger than what you want but will give you an idea.

From other threads on this, and others forums, I haven't heard of anyone starting up a small shop for less than 35k, and that's just for the basics.

95k for my mate + lease
£800 a month electric
£1000 water
then insurances im not too sure on the cost of them
£300 for a standard council licence (i dont know how much the other licences are)
i don't know how much for the tanks and intallation but a hell of alot
stocking every week or two (fish, plants, foods, lights, setups, all hardware ect)
signs for the shop in excess of £2000
plus lots lots more i don't know about too much
this is just rough
