after a few months of homelessness i've finally found a place to live! :D which means i can set up my tank again :p

still not really sure what i want, the tanks about 35 gal
my current ideas are:
a group of brasiliensis, if this would work how many would be good?
a pair of nics
a single medium sized fish, like a JD or something else with a bit of character

do brasiliensis breed easily? i'd prefer not to breed if i had a group of fish, too much fighting etc
i've never owned any of the above fish which is why i'd like to know if it would be a suitable setup

cheers.

Hi Brasiliensis get way to big for a 35 gallon - they get to around 10-12 inches so a 35 gallon just is not an option really. Same for a pair of nics - male nics get really big and chunky - quite rotund as well- again hitting the 10 inch mark with ease, I think even a female nicaraguan would not be that well suited to a 35 gallon tank.

Not sure on the JD as I know some people have had success with the electric blues in 180 liters but thats still like 15 more gallons than this tank.

But if you like the Brasiliensis there is a relative of theirs that could work very well in that tank which is Geophagus Iporangensis - http://www.seriouslyfish.com/profile.php?genus=Geophagus&species=iporangensis&id=743 :) nice smaller growing Geophagus - you could possibly work a pair of these in your tank with some dithers and catfish. I would be tempted to start of with a group of 4 or 5 juveniles and wait to let 2 pair off then rehome the rest. That said though being Geophagus they could work as a group in that tank better than a pair but it would depend on the individuals.

Brazilliensis breed worse than convicts, I had a group 1 male 3 female, I constantly had fry because the male spawned with all three in sucession

You would probably be able to get away with some of the smaller acara, A. metae something like that :good:
