Sand

Yep if it's for saltwater you would to do some serious cleaning and it still might not be salt free.

It is possible as long as you make sure you clean every last grain of sand.

Although free, sand from the beach carry's millions of parasites and other nasty things so it is imperative that you wash it and boil it thouroughly otherwise who may have some dead livestock on hand

Also, as mentioned above, it should only be used in saltwater setups

Is it possible to put sand from the Jersey shore into my fish tank? That way it's free. I would wash it real well.
I thought it is only $10 for a big bag of sand? I think it would be much more safe for your fish to just buy play sand and wash it out, your not saving that much money anyways. :)

Sand is very cheap to buy

If you get sand from the beach you will have to spend ALOT of time collecting it, transporting it and cleaning it.

Also it might be Illegal to "steal" sand from a beach - You could face a fine of some sort! - Would probably be more hastle than its worth

I filled my tank (20G) for £3.25 and still had enough sand to top it up later if I need to!!

yep it really won't be worth spening all that time cleaning it, when you can buy it for litle money!!

I'll be buying a big 25kg bag of fine dried silica sand from my local agregate place which will cost about £2.99
