Hey, so i have a 90 litre 3 foot tank, its been up and running for about 4 months so far and i did it mostly fro free, i got the sand for free from my friend but i dont like it! its too dark and coarse and its filthy ! as it is second hand. i know there probly isnt a easy way to do this. will i have to bag all my fish up and take everything out except the water?

Hiya,

On a few tanks when i've renewed the sand all's i do is start a syphon using common garden hose and slowly vacuum the sand out

That said on a few occasions i've left fish in and topped the water up with dechlo included, on other occasions i've cupped/netted the fish out

If the fish are small and likely to get sucked up i'd air on the side of removal, but larger fish i'd leave in

Whatever you do, use fresh sand, wash wash and wash some more or you'll end up looking at a tank of what seems like flour water lol

Ohh and a tip for you ...............

When the tank is ready for new sand, make sure there's more water in than the required depth of substrate (only really applies if fish are out and you run tank totally dry)

Then with fresh nicely washed sand just put about 1 litre of sand in at a time (i use a 1litre plastic food jug) and spread the sand around

Doing this is twofold, one it's easier to spread out, two you won't get trapped air bubbles in the sand layer/s

Hope that helps

Tony

Thanks tony, that rly helped now i need to decide... dark or light substrate.....

I just got Argos Play Sand to put in mine and I love the lightish colour of it as my tank is quite dark with the lights off right now (have black gravel)so I'm hoping it'll lighten the whole look up. On the other hand I've heard fish can look even more stunning against a dark substrate/background. That was why I initially went for black.

Yea, i think my Kribs will look amazing against a black substrate but i think a white sand will go better in my tank. this is the gravel i have at the moment...

Yeah they'd look great against black. What lovely fish!

You have some very nice looking female kribs displaying to each other Evobe. Do you have a male and a cave structure where they can lay eggs and care for them?

Well you cant see very well in the video but one of them is male, i had them identified on this forum as male and female, and yes i have proped a big boulder up with a small rock with room to dig under, they have been looking around but no digging yet :p

Thanks to Twinklecaz's advice I also changed my gravel today using Argos play sand and it looks stunning, and at only £2.99 a 20kg bag, a bargain. The light colour of the sand has really brightened up the tank and given it a lovely clean look.

Great to hear m8 i tried to go to argos today but i got there too l8 and it was closed :p
