Hello!

I wantred to ask if an internal filter will be abled to be kept with sand?

I really want sand substrate but i will have an internal filter (no other option)

Will te internal filter work alongside the sand?

thanks!

Would about an inch or 2 off the sand be ok?

thats great news!

so sand is quite heavy and doesnt float around?

it kind of 'poofs' into a small cloud when disturbed (putting in plants, rocks, etc) and takes longer to settle than gravel but yeah, after it has settled its all at the bottom and (imo) looks far better than gravel :)

i agree, it beats gravel in the looks area! Im getting it for the corys im getting though :)

Do you clean the sand with a siphon? Does it suck up alot of sand?

Can sand be cleaned with a net and is that effective? (net which sieves sand but collects waste)

sorry i cant answer these yet and im still cycling and havent tried cleaning it yet :) though ive heard u can use gravel vacs with sand as long as its got good enough suction to suck up the crap off the sand from an inch or so above it, to avoid sucking up sand.

that net idea of yours sounds good, i hadnt thought of that. i might try it myself :)

Thanks for the replies!! I have another question though

Wont some of the waste be lighter than the sand when vacuuming?

The net idea came from a website i was reading about sand! interesting idea indeed, ill use my net to try this, it sounds easier than vacuuming

The problem with using a net is that you will also pick up the sand.

If we are cleaning then we use you can use a gravel vac as someone said you just need to hold it slighty about the sand and if you wiggle it around (gently) then you will disturb the dirt and it should be sucked up off the bottom.

But to answer you actually question we have internal with sand and as long as they are about an inch or so about the sand then they are fine.

thanks nina!

a net which will sieve sand. meaning the holes are big enough for the sand to sift through but the dirt to get caught.

Thanks for clearing up some of my concerns!

as long as you dont have any fish that kick up sand, it should be fine. to clean it, just keep the gravel vac about an inch above the sand. the crap should be sucked up but the sand should just stay there.
