Salt in freshwater aquariums.

I've head some people add salt to their aquaria to keep infections and bacteria down. Woudn't this destroy the beneficial bacteria in the filter?

But if it doesn't destroy beneficial bacteria will it destroy bad bacteria? If it doesn't hurt either then what is the point of it?
