Roots On Stems?

Smells a bit fishy

This may be a silly question, but is it normal to have plants grow roots on the stems? There are quite a few growing. Just wondering whether it means that there is anything wrong, like not enough nutrients in the substrate or something.

Many thanks

Ok cool, just that they were very high up, just didn't know if there was something I should be doing. Thanks for confirmation :)

If anything, it's because there isn't enough nutrients in the water column. Btw your stems are most probably getting their nutrients from the water column rather than the substrate.
Nothing really to worry about unless you start noticing deficiencies.

Well most of my plants have a brown edge to some of the leaves, that's why I asked, I've been dosing the tank with ProFito by easylife, low tech and 38w T8 for 6-8 hours a day

Does it rub off?
The excess ariel roots and discolouration both indicate to me a lack of nutrient.
What is your water change regime?

About 25% weekly. No well some edges have been bitten off/fallen off, not sure if that's why they are brown

If your tap water has decent levels of nitrate and phosphate (find out from waater board) then you can add another 25% water change per week.
Alternativly you could allow the N and P to build up naturally. This can be achieved by doing a small water change per month. If the plants are growing and you have quite a few of them, then this is not dangerous.

Hmmm ok, so your saying to do more or less water changes, not what I am doing now? Do you think I have enough lighting? As I am going to put 2 T5 54w bulbs in the tank as soon as I can find some bulbs lol.

Yes, if you didn't want to simply add some nutrients.

Do you think I have enough lighting?

Oh yes. Very very rarely do people not have enough light. It's most commonly lack of nutrients, CO2, flow.

As I am going to put 2 T5 54w bulbs in the tank as soon as I can find some bulbs lol.

That's going to need mega CO2 injection and lots of ferts. Flow and circulation will also need to be boosted.
