I'm thinking of buying an RO unit for my 4ft tank and have a question. The unit i saw comes with an adaptor to fit to an external tap, perfect so i can run it outside (though not during frost apparently). But can i just attach it, run it for awhile to get the water i want, then disconnect it and put in the shed till i need it again, or does it always need to be running?

The first one I had attached to a tap. I never drank the water it produced, it was just for the trops. I'm told, that if you store them for any length of time wet, they can attract some bacteria and mould, which sounds reasonable, however, I never had any trouble leaving mine off for a day or two as necessary. Bought a plumbed in jobby later, the original one just didn't produce enough.

Certainly you do not want it to freeze, the ice crystals will ruin the membrane.
