Hi All

I think I have 2 GBR's but they are young, about an inch in length or slightly bigger. A friend basically got a tank load, didn't cycle, bung 6 of these fellas in and within 2 days, 4 of them died. So she called me and asked if I would take the remaining two.

She says she was told they are 'rams' but which species, she wouldn't know.

I've tried taking pictures but they are in hiding at the moment. They look nearly colorless, whether or not stress, not too sure. One of them has a slight red tinge around it's dorsals, tail and ventrals and has what looks to be the start of a formation of a black line running down it's face and over it's eye (this one also has a longer front ray than the other.

Does this sound like a GBR?

I think they are bolv. rams now, comparing pics with a GBR, they've got the bolv. ram tinge to them.

Ta x

bolivian rams lack the blue face mark. another way to tell between them is eye colour. bolivian rams 99% have a gold coloured eye, while 99% blue rams have a red/orange coloured eye

in washed out rams the red colouration on fin edges can make them appear like either species. and both species develop the vertical black band running through the eye

hey got the orange/red eyes. Unfortunately, this morning, 1 of them died (think it was the female) but when I got her, I was iffy she'd survive. The other one has colored up more, seems to hide in one place but managed to take 2 pellets this morning.

What does a stressed bolv. ram look like? Sorry for all the questions, never dealt with rams before, so want to make sure this little fella lasts.

Sorry about the Ram Beth  Doesn`t sound like there`s a lot you could have done with the way they were kept before though.

One of my Bolivians got very stressed before I took them to my lfs due to being bullied, he/she went very pale grey, hardly any visible markings and only a touch of red on the outside line of the tail.

If the Ram has red/orange eyes it`s very likely to be a GBR but can you get a pic at all?

whne my son goes to nursery this afternoon, i will stake-out the tank and try to get a decent pic lol

My LFS gave me 3 free bolv. rams yesterday, after I told them what happened to the 2 that I have/had. The original male (i think is a male) was looking really glum and I really didn't have high prospects for him. So the manager in my LFS said that I could try putting a couple more rams in, see if it makes a difference. It was only by an off chance, as I went in to give them the last 30 odd guppy fry I had left.

So I added them in yesterday afternoon and slowly, the original one perked up.

I've come down this morning and all 4 are swimming about with eachother, very active and the colors have perked up. 2 have really pink bellies, does that mean anything?

I'll try to get pictures of them today, as they are all out and about

It sounds like you have GBR's if they have visibly pink bellies. One of the difficulties with sexing the Bolivians is that the females don't have the pink bellies, if they did it wouldn't be so difficult

If you look at the first pic I posted above the male is on the left and female on the right however, the females I have at the moment (5 in total) are much pinker in the belly area than the one in the pic.

ohh this is all confusing! All 4 look the same, if only I could get them to stay still enough for a picture lol

I think the only way you`re going to get an id for them is to try your best to get a pic of them

The first picture is of the original ram I received a few days back. I know he is the first one (or is he a she?), as he/she has the pinker ventrals.

These are the other 2, the 4th one wasn't coming out to play.

Are they bolivians?

Sorry for the blurry shots, they move too quick for me, to take a decent pic.

blue face mark, red eye and a distinct iridescent blue sheen on the body.

they are blue rams. no idea how u could mistake them as bolivian rams especially after the 2 pictures already posted by elisew
