Hi,

What make's the new external filter? Should be fairly easy to set up - depending on how legible the instruction manual is, lol. I replaced my internal a while ago, and kept the old one running for about 2 weeks or so, then put some of the old filter's sponges (cut up a bit) into the new filter just to make sure.

oops

Afraid I don't really know anything about Fluval's - both of mine are Eheim's, but I'd rate them (apart from the high prices).

Im personally going for the Eheim make myself, although a 2224. Also getting an Eheim Aquaball internal after my lavish time with the fluval 2. However, I must say, the Fluval external series with their "setup DVD" make them look like they ahve the "complete idiots guide..." book covered before they could make it and that would put a temptation to that direction for alot of people IMO.

DONT GET THE FLUVAL!!!! Eheims are superior in every way possible and having owned two leaky fluvals both of which have ended their lives smashed in the garden i would NEVER let another fluval external filter into my house again.

what eheim model would best suit my tank?is the 2128 ok?i keep large fish if this makes a difference

I use the Eheim classic models on all my tanks, they are very basic and have no fancy gadgetry but they do the job and run forever while costing a fraction of the price of the newer models. A 2217 will do the same job as a 2128 and only costs £70.

Personally with the fish you keep i would advise using two external canisters to get a greater volume of water turned over per hour, ideally you are looking for a turn over of as close to 5 times the tank volume per hour as possible (2250lph) so two 2217s which each pump 1000lph would be ideal.

I like running a filter on either end of the big tanks. It means far less dead spots. On the 125 gallon I'm running a 2028 and 2 Emperor 400 HOBs. The 400s will be replaced at some point with another Eheim. On another tank I'm running a 2128 and if I were to buy it over I'd get the 2028 and a separate heater.

ive just been to 4 different places and noone stocks eheim :/ anyone know any good online places to buy one?

I got mine from - www.store.livingseas.co.uk

Good service, was the cheapest at the time of my purchase, but this was over a year ago.

Good luck which ever Eheim you decide to go with. :good:

if i ordered 2217 from livingseas for £75 and ran it side by side with my sh**y jewel for a while then once ready i will cut out the jewel and put in another 2217.will this then be a very well filtered tank?
edit:thx for the help and advice
