Red Zebra Behavior

My dominant red zebra in my new tank keeps getting mouthfulls of sand from around a cave and spitting them out somewhere else like hes clearing it for his home. Is this just typical behavior, or is he/she getting ready to spawn?

Totally normal Malawi behaviour and exactly why you never sit your rocks on top of gravel... always put rocks in aquarium before gravel or the malawis might topple the whole lot by digging under the base rocks!
