I quite fancy some red platties for my tank (cycled today - whoop, whoop!).

I dont want to be overrun by millions of little 'uns in a few weeks time so is it OK to just have males or females in the tank or do I need a combination?

thnaks

You can keep all males or all females. In fact I prefer a tank with females only so they don't get hassled by the males. Then when I want to breed them, I add a male for a week then get rid of him.
If your platies came from a mixed tank then chances are any females in that tank will already be pregnant.

If you are definate you don't want fry then go for a group of all males its the only way you will escape fry lol.

Folks

Thanks so much for the advice, males it is then!

Mick

with all males you want atleast 5, they don't have to be the same colour although buying them at the same time will be better in the long run

I've seen all male tanks with 3 introduced at different times that was peaceful... the males don't fight, but if females are present they harass the females and sometimes each other. Platys are the most peaceful of all the livebearers. The more there are the better though.
