I recently decided to get a 30L tank and get a betta for it,
i had my tank set up and ready to go with the heater on for about two days and i was going to add a filter i have from another tank because i got a new filter for the other tank and the two filters had been running in the old tank together for two weeks. the filter i was transferring had been in the tank for a few months and it was fully cycled.
So my plan was to get the betta and then transfer the filter as soon as i got the betta.
when i went to the lfs to get the fish they wouldn't sell me the fish because they said the heater should be running in the tank at least two weeeks before you add any fish to it???
I'm relatively new (about 6 months) to tropical fish but i know all about the nitrogen cycle and checking my water but this really doesn't sound right to me so if anyone could let me know is this right or were they just blatantly wrong??
They also said if a heater breaks down you should remove your fish from your tank and leave the new heater running in the tank for two weeks on its own but i think if you did this your bacteria in the filter would end up dying off with no ammonia to live on.
Anybody any views on this
