Question About Ammonia Used For Fishless Cycle

I'm trying to set up a 20 gallon tank that's going to be used temporarily for two goldfish while a leak in the pond they currently live in is fixed. I found some ammonia that I had initially bought close to 4 years ago at Walmart, to be used then for a tank I was never able to start up. I remember at the time I had read to shake it, and if it didn't foam it was okay for use -- and it doesn't. So, without thinking to check the ingredients again before using it this time, I put it in to start the cycle. Well, the next day I finally got to thinking I should check the ingredients, and low and behold, it has surfactants listed.

So now I'm really curious as to what I should do. I'm still reading in places that if it doesn't foam it's okay to use, and in older threads circa the time I bought the ammonia, Walmart is listed as one of the places to get good ammonia. So is it still okay, or should I do a 100% water change and start over again? What do surfactants do in a tank, anyways?

Thank you in advance for your help -- I want to do the best I can for these fish! :)

I wouldn't risk it, I'd do a 100% change. You can read about surfactants on wikipedia. Both the ammonia and the surfactants may have been weak in the old bottle but if you can do the change, why risk it? WD

I agree, I'd start again.
