Does everybody have one or use?  If so for both fish and coral?

Also how long would you quarantine for?

Reading through journals and I haven't come across any mention of Q tanks.

Sorry, I have a spare 8g for that purpose.

:) haven't needed to use it yet though.

It's there if I need it.

Yeah some articles insist quarantine before introducing to main tank. But from the journals here that dosen't appear to happen and appears to work for the most part.

If I proceed and get a nano, then persuading the wife that I need another tank may be an issue. :S

Well, it's a grey area. My LFS quarantines my fish for me for like 2 weeks and I get all my fish from the same LFS. She won't sell me anything that's sick and she keeps her tanks extremely clean. I'm very lucky, most LFS are NOT like this.

As for corals, I dip them before I put them into my tanks and many of my corals are either from A. same LFS, or B. other hobbyists. Everything gets dipped regardless. Now, that being said... I do plan on ordering some Liveaquaria stuff in the future. Those items would get quarantined. In which case, I then have that small tank I told you about. But again, the corals I'd order from there would be dipped to prevent any contamination. I dunno. I can see quarantine for disease treatment, that's for sure. You can't not have one if Ich breaks out, especially since the treatment will kill your corals and other inverts. So, have extra SW and an empty tank. Problem solved for treatment. For disease, you don't need anything fancy, just SW, some hiding places and a filter that can have carbon when you want to remove meds. That's it. Got those items.

Thats an easier sell. A hospital tank for disease.:good:

My LFS appear quite good. They have Q tanks on show. Its also nice to add your stock to your tank with out having to wait.

Thanks for the feedback.

I have a 29g tank for qt.

Really, it's up to your personal preference if you want to or not. If you don't have much invested in your livestock then you may not, however, if you have collected quite a bit of nice fish then it may be in your interest to QT. There have been several tank wipe outs on here. One I remember in particular was SkiFletch. He had a gorgeous 65g full of wrasses. He introduced some w/out QT and wiped out quite a bit if not all of his stock (I can't remember if it was most or all.) You'd have to do a search to read about it. It was quite a time ago.

As for me, my main tank has a Platinum Picasso and Sanjay's Black Photon clown fish pair. Not only is it costly to replace these, they came from a gentleman whom lived in our local community and died of cancer. My mom died of cancer too. I feel a need to carry on, I suppose. Loosing one of these (or both of these) would be emotionally heartbreaking for me.

I don't Qt in my 12g tank. I do have separate siphon hoses, cleaning apparatuses, and "tools" if you will for this tank and my main tank. This is to ensure possible disease isn't transferred to the main tank.

I do dip my corals and I also inspect my snails. I even threw a couple snails away a few weeks ago because they had something funky looking their shell. I'd rather toss a few critters than introduce something bad to my tank...go ahead flame me for that if you want. One of them appeared to be hydroids and I'm not sure what the second was.

So all in all, it's up to you.
