This is speculation and not science.
What health risks in Glofish?
Glofish are not mass produced, and many many species are bred in large numbers.
Why is coloration abuse? Is it abuse to raise Albino Corys? As I recall, these are all farm raised and not wild caught.
Your right many fish are mass produced and Im not ok with it but then you throw in genetically modifying them and thats 10x worse.
ANY animal that is genetically modified would 100% have more health risks then the natural generic versions.
No its not abuse to raise ALBINO corydoras because they are albino. There are many cases where animals produce albino offspring. That is natural.
But I do think they shouldnt be mass produced and they should put in "normal" cories to make the bloodline stronger.
Albino anything can have health issues.

Notice I mentioned dogs and cats. There are also rabbits, cavies, sheep and many other non-food domesticated animals.
More animals than you would ever care to know about have been bred for certain characteristics. Some of them are here for good and some have disappeared altogether. Is it wrong ? No. Most of these creatures cannot survive in the wild and would get weeded out quickly if they escaped. They thrive only under our care. This Lacey Act thing is meant to try and get a handle on non-native invasive species. There's another horse that left the barn too long ago. If you don't like something don't keep them. If you do like something and are afraid it will disappear then get busy breeding and get with others doing the same or else shut up.

Could become ill? How and what?
You made the claim, provide evidence?
Saying search Google is not evidence. The claimant need to provide evidence, or to cite that evidence.
This argument is not even relevant, I'm sorry. Domestic animals are not fish. We humans are doing a good job of eradicating species, and it would say more for humanity if we worried more about that and did not go around messing with genetics in fish which can have absolutely no benefit to anyone. This is not scientific research to better things, as are some of the experiments with zebra danios; it is nothing but satisfying the whims of people who frankly should not be in the hobby. The initial thrust of this thread was to point out the possible demise of this hobby, and this issue of Glofish is one of the issues that gives these folks ammunition to bring this about. This modified atrocity has for years been banned in the UK and EU, and that at least is sensible.
Firstly I'll be the bigger man and end this argument about glo fish if you want to argue more create your own post about it. This is from a while ago give it a read and see what you think. Please do your own research on glofish. And check your facts next time.

To be clear, are you saying that those who enjoy Glofish should not be in the hobby?

Given the scientific information, and what is clearly set out in the article linked in post #214, and the fact that the majority of Western nations have banned the fish...yes. This is exactly why the hobby cannot be left to act responsibly, and animal rights people get the ammunition they need to force governments to step in.

Post #214 contains no facts or data to support the claim. Simply concerns, and from 2014 at that.

But some biologists and food scientists, like those at the Center for Food Safety, are worried the fish will make it into the wild and disrupt natural biodiversity.

"We feel that the use of GE [genetic engineering] for wild animals - and these are essentially wild animals, they are not domesticated, they're wild, they can escape, people throw them back into the wild - can have long-running impacts that can be pretty scary. GE invasive species have caused a lot of problems in this country. We want to be careful about contributing to those issues," CFS attorney Peter Jenkins told ABC News today.
And the rebuttal, albeit not a cite from the FDA study.

"We have submitted detailed information regarding our fish to the U.S. Food & Drug Administration…. (The FDA) found no evidence that our fluorescent fish pose any more threat to the environment than their non-fluorescent counterparts," Yorktown's website for GloFish reads.

Wow, that went sideways in a hurry! Remember to keep it civil and avoid name calling and painting with too broad a brush when we're having a disagreement. Also please remember that sometimes you have to state your case then agree to disagree. Thanks!

Someone mentioned fishkeepers being good taxpayers. Maybe that's why the irs is hiring 90k new agents and they'll be armed and ready for "dangerous, possibly life-threatening duties".
That aside, these laws that get packaged altogether so that pork nonsense is passed along with the few useful things the idiots in charge "work" on is why almost nobody cares about what they say or do anymore. While some regulation would definitely benefit everyone involved, as usual the overreach and ulterior motives defeat any usefulness and only causes more problems than what it allegedly addresses. It's tiresome.
