I hit up craigs list for a new tank. I noticed allot of people are askin $150+ for as small as 20 gallons including filter heater gravel ect. which is fine and dandy, but come on 150? is it just me or is that ridiculous? my 50 was 115+filter made 165+ gravel and water treatment about 200. so why would i pay $50 less for less than half the size and in used condition?

is $150 reasonable for a 20 gal with a starter kit? I bought a tank hood filter heater combo 20 gal for 50 bucks once... :/

Prices have gone up (ebay is a rip now) but I'm not sure, how much is that in sterling.. £92.60 (#41#### exchange rate is awful at the minute)...
16.5 Imperial gallons .... 75 Litres...
new in the UK are between £100 and £180 dependeing on make....

So, not bad plus equipment!

At least it wasn't the 10 US Gal I saw while looking for someone with bogwood. Would you pay $200 for gravel, heater, filter (under gravel), water conditioner, 3 fake plants, stand (mind you the stand looked like if you added water to the tank it would collapse), and of course a 10 gal aquarium? before you ask no there was no hood and no air pump.

Theres cracking deals on Gumtree (for UK and Ireland only I think, sorry Yanks =/)

I got my eyes on a big 4 foot tank + stand going for sale at £100 =P

If I get it, I'll just put silicone on the corners to be safe and it will be spot on like =P

So overall no, I think there are some tanks that are ridiculously pricey but others that are dirt cheap. Depends where your looking really.

I just bought a 75 gallon with the stand (not real wood but still made well) the ballast that holds two t5 bulbs, glass top and hob filter all brand new for 280 dollars. I thought that was a pretty good deal

Folks who are casual fish keepers do not have a clue about the true pricing of aquarium stuff. They have usually overpaid for their setup and think it is worth more on resale than it is.

A good rule of thumb is that most tanks and equipment have a maximum value of $1/gal and 50% or less of reasonable retail cost. Remember, reasonable means the lowest price not the highest price you can find it for. Price any given filter online st one of the major aquarium suppliers abd then price the same filter at a local fish or pets store and you will see what reasonable and unreasonable are.

Don't forget about the twice a year buck a gallon sales at Petco- granted it is now only for tanks that are 10, 20, 40 and 55 gals. But what is a used 55 worth if a new one can be had on sale for $55?

Besides, just because folks put unreasonable prices on used stuff on craigslist doesn't mean they actually sell the item for that. Counter offer what you think it is worth, the worst that happens is you don't buy it.

Petsmart has been doing sales on 10 - 75 gals

Just bought a really nice 4ft 200l tank with stand and dual t5 light fixture for 60 pounds. Thats like 95 bucks, couldn't be happier. Found it on gumtree which is like uk equiv of craigslist. Looked up the stats on the tank and found out it sells for over a 1000 us dollars new in europe. Not really any online retailers with this exact tank here in the uk for some reason.

Ps.I'm an american living in the uk.
