We are very new to fish in general and out of nowhere my husband noted how fat this fish (orange) looks, we think it's a platy??. The same weekend we got a pair of swordtail fish and the lady said the female (yellow) looks pregnant. My sister used to breed guppies growing up so I understand some of the process but i just don't know if these fish are pregnant and if so when should I separate into the breeding box?

yes the orange fish is a platy. yes it is pregnant. babies should be here within the next couple days. 😁 the yellow fish is not a female swordtail. that’s a male platy.

😲 I never looked at the yellow one, just trusted the lady! Now I see (I'm very much still learning). Will a swordtail only breed with a swordtail? And when should I put the orange fish in the breeding box?

How to Identify Pregnant Guppies

fishvantage.com.png

  • The fish's coloring will fade.
  • The gills will remain partly opened.
  • The fish will have an arched back and will appear to be pushing.
  • The fish's eating habits will change, either eating voraciously or not at all.
  • The fish will remain in or around one spot in the aquarium, often around the heater.
  • The fish may become more aggressive or skittish.
  • The stomach of the fish may take on an almost square appearance.
