I have read that guppy release their fry every four weeks, however i am wondering how correct this is. My female had her fry on the 27th April, which is 3 weeks and two days ago, she is looking very ready again, and she is seperating herself from the rest of the tankmates! When should I seperate her?

I will try and get a photo

Ok best photo i can get

4 weeks is just the rough guider some drop before 4 weeks some drop after, she looks very very pregnant to me though :good: hows your other fry doing?

ooh lilfishe to the rescue again, what would i do without you lol. I was actually going to create another post about my fry, rather worring situation at the moment. I have 20 ish fry and about 7 of them are really huge doing really great, but the others don't look if they have grown since around four days they are still very tiny and havn't started to get their colours like the larger fry have. Unfortunately I think the larger fry are still a bit too small to go in the main tank as i have a couple of large plecs that may suck them up

don't worry mine all seem to grow at thier own pace i had some one week then another lot a week later that seemed to grow quicker i suppose it depends on how big they are born at.

most of the last guppy fry i raised were like 3/4" by 4-5 weeks and the males had good colors coming in.

oh btw that dark spot near her anal fin is pretty visible, thats a sign that they could drop any day now

Shes had that dark spot (gravid spot) since i got her, and she has already had once batch of fry. When she is close i noticed the spot gets pinky/peachy coloured patch at the back of it, which she has now.

Are they in a breeder net, or a seperate fry tank or what? If they are in a breeder net, they can only stay in for 2 weeks max, otherwise you run the risk of stunting them. :(

As for your girl, she looks pretty ready. If you move her into a seperate breeder tank, I'd say you could move her now. If you put her in a breeder trap/net, then it's harder...because you don't want to keep them in there very long, because of the stress factor. You could always just leave her in the tank to give birth, and give the fry lots of plants for cover. Floating plants are great, and hornwort seems to be a favorite with Livebearer keepers.

Im not saying your doing anything bad here and i know some fry grow faster than others but i change 25% water in my 15 gallon fry tank every other day and after 8 weeks they were around 1 + 3/4 so i put them in my 55 gallon now which houses a few bigger fish and they love it...im not saying your doing a bad job or anything,im just telling you all what i do,which im sure you already know and do anyway :p :)

No they are not in a breeder net they are in my 12 gallon fry/hospital tank. I have moved my lady into this tank as they fry are too big for her to eat.

Thanks for the advice Jonny i do 3 - 4 water changes a week :p the first batch of fry are rather large now.

Oh okay, great. :) What do you feed, and how often then?

Sorry for all the questions, I'm just trying to figure out what's going on here. You could just have a slower growing batch, because of inbreeding. It's hard to say.

i have fed them finely crushed flake food, three times a day. They have just progressed to small amounts of bloodworms.

My fry grow at different rates too. I've got several different ages in the fry tank, but some are bigger than others. I change the water frequently and feed them fry food and crushed freeze-dried bloodworms. I think they just grow at different rates. I don't think you are doing anything wrong. :D
