Last night I was surfing the bet & was reading up on the new "Doctor Fish Spa" fad that has taken the world of pedicures by storm. The link on our homepage takes you to a supplier of both the fish & equipment needed.

At the bottom of the page it says that it comes with a Pre Matured Filter for Instant Fish Introduction.
Presuming they know what they are talking about & the filter is realy cycled I thought "what an absolutely fantastic idea" why on earth wont our lfs' do the same?

All they would have to do is have one or two of each of the filters they sell running in a huge tank (doesnt even have to be on display) & when they sell a new filter they could ask if the customer wanted mature media in it for an extra charge. They would make a killing as the customer could quite litraly buy a brand new tank & have it set up & full of fish in a couple of days.

Any thoughts?

I have been talking to the manager of my independent lfs and he's been getting beauticians ringing him for 200-300 of these for this 'new' treatment. He flatly refuses to sell them for this, as you mentioned above, there is no cycling involved. Fish are over stocked, and they really would last five minutes.

my advice Tom, if your needing a pedicure is to get yourself an emery board ;)

If I`d known what a pain cycling is I would have happily given 20 quid for cycled sponges to go with my filter

Haha

Had to do a double take to confirm that what I believe I read was in fact what I read.

I'm sure this is some joke I'm just not getting. I don't understand any of the first post. I don't know what "surfing the bet" means? And when I click on the tropical fish forever home (which I've maybe done 3 times over the years) all I get is some text and little blinking colored dots. Sheesh

"Surfing the bet" means I have fat fingers :p

I was tempted to setup a tank and filter and cycle it so that i could just start mailing mature media to people when they come on the forum and say they have just bought tank/heater/fish and what do they do now. or just people looking for mature media. Not sure how well it would travel in the mail though.

With my admittedly inexpert logic, surely if you popped the media in a normal fish bag, in some water, and gave it 5ppm ammonia as food for the bacteria, wouldn't that work?

Not sure i would have thought oxygen would have been more of an issue than food and feeding it just may lead to oxygen running out faster. I'm not even sure if it's viable, just a thought i had.

Over here there is a fad where you go to a pedicurist and sit with your feet in a tank of garra rufa fish, they eat away all the dead skin

That's what i did! I had the filters running for a couple of weeks before the tank was delivered.
Not sure if its the best idea tho. The nitrate levels are high 8 weeks later! How often do you do water changes? and what percentage of water do you remove and replace?

This is really popular in the UK now.
Do you know any experts on here re. Garra Rufa fish? i have a few concerns with our tanks.
Thanks

i believe what us fish keepers ultimately attempt to provide is, as close to as possible, the natural environment expected by the fish (within reason, cost etc).

It would not be feasable to meet the requirements for these Doctor fish/Garra Rufa fish within a foot spa business. These fish are solely ( :hey: ) being used for they eat dead skin.

The only option where the fish would be happy is for you to locate their natural home (river...) and stick your feet in there! - maybe charge people to do so if you want a business out of it

The whole "doctor fish" thing is a side issue, we seem to of got sidetracked, my main point was about selling a pre matured filter & what a good idea that would be.
