Came back from a funeral this weekend and came back to a fish with Popeye. Now how do I go about curing it.

is it one eye or both?

The only treatment I have used successfully on popeye is Waterlife; Myxazin.

Other members could probably enlighten you more.

You could use Epsom Salts to help reduce osmostic pressure on the popeye and help it heal quicker, although it has been a while since I did this so I cannot suggest a dosage.

It would be better to quarantine the fish rather than expose everyone in the main tank to medication and/or Epsom Salts, then change ~20% water daily in addition to your chosen approach to help the fish recover.

The chances are this single eye popeye has come about through an injury, rather than an internal bacterial problem.

I agree with Goat.

If you don't have epsom salt, you can use regular aquarium salt.  I think the dose is 1 tbsp per 5 gallons, but you'll want to confirm that.

As an injury, the best move is salt (to reduce the pressure as Goat mentioned, and lots of water changes...  Clean water will allow the fish to heal without issue.  A bit of melafix to reduce the chance of infection will help a bit as well.

I've had mollies with single-eye popeye before - I might be flying in the face of Goat and Eagles, but all I did was daily water changes for a week.

I had a neon with it...  I did a QT with salt and melafix, and water changes daily (~33%).  After two weeks, and no improvement (and no worsening) I figured the worst of it was over, and started to acclimate him back to the main display.   Dropping salinity over the course of a week.

I put him back in the main tank and the injured eye is almost back to normal now... ~ 9 months from when it first occured.

Alright Thanks everyone! I'll give that a shot and update you guys on his health soon!

Isn't it normally bacterial? That or physical injury. Can't remember what my book says!

My book is google and it failed me. LOL

I've got the Interpet Manual of Fish Health - really informative :)
Can't look it up atm - at the kebab shop :p

Usually two eyes is bacterial...  A single eye is usually an injury.

Oh a book! interesting! I'll have to take a look at that.

So how long does it take for the injury to heal?
