Hi

I recently got one koi and two goldfish for my pond..... And for couple days now they seem to just hide all time in between liner in pond and when anyone approaches they either dint move or dart around pond very fast????

Why is this?? And when will they settle?? Can anyone suggest anything has they don't seem to be settlin even after 3 days now???

Anyhelp please, thanks louize :)

Hi louize,

There may be a subforum for ponds, I'm not sure. I have never owned a pond and am not an expert. Its true though that fish can sometimes take some days to get settled in a new environment. I assume you've perhaps had this pond with other fish for a while or have received instructions on starting it up? In the freshwater tank world (including coldwater tanks with goldfish) its very important that the "biofilter" be prepared properly prior to introducing fish. One of the critical needs for that process is having a using a good liquid-reagent test kit. We use these to test for ammonia, nitrite(NO2), pH and nitrates(NO3), but its the ammonia and nitrite that we are most worried about. If these toxins are elevated it can cause fish to give symptoms of stress which would be hard to tell apart from the fish behavior you are describing.

Have a read of our Nitrogen Cycle and Fishless Cycle articles in the Beginners Resource Center. These are important topics that would help bring you up to speed if you've not encountered the information before.

Yes.... I have tropical tanks and fish tanks.

and yes the pond is fully cycled and tested with testing kit.

Everything is fine, theres a couple plants.

But the fish just seem to sit at the bottom ( hiding ), And when approach the pond they all dart around swimming very fast and bumping into sides cause they scared that much.

Iam not sure whats up, i may try alot of floating plants so they dont get scared once approaching pond?

what does everyone else think?

thanks

anyone please???? tank is cycled as stated above.... any suggestions????

Maybe it's too cold/hot for them?

My goldfish are always on the go; I don't understand why they'd be so scared...even when I added some babies the babies were the first ones to eat the food much to the amazement of the old fish haha.

There indeed a subforum for coldwater and ponds.

Try down there. They may have more experience with koi.
