Hey Everyone,

I need some advice.

I currently have a 10 gallon tank but I will be getting a new 25 gallon tank in a week.

As I wrote in my first post I have fry for the first time as a fish owner. But now I have 12 babies (and that number is to only get bigger). I am probably going to only keep one or two of my fry and either give away or sell the rest. Now my problem is this. I can get the adult fish easily into the new tank. But if I intend to give the fry away should I just leave them in the 10 gallon tank and let them get bigger?

Also how old should they be before I give them away or sell them?

My fear is that they will continue to breed and I will end up with so many babies in the new big tank. I can't tell when my female fish is pregnant, I don't see the black mark on the underbelly or anything. I do know this, I have two platies that her very similar and the male will chase away any other platy (female as well) from the other one.

Obviously I have never been through this before, any help is good.

Thanks,

Lea-Andra

Hi welcome to tff what fish are you going to keep in your 25g i have a 35g with platys that breed all the time i tend to leave the fry in there and only the fittest and strongest fry survive the others are eaten harsh i know but this way you dont get overrun with fry i probably get 2 or 3 out of a batch you will end up with lots in time but your lps should take the ones you dont want i would leave the fry in the 10g and let them grow and put your adult fish into your 25g when its ready good luck

hi,

:hi: ,good luck with all your fry,
my female platy have fry every four weeks, now im leaving mine in main tank with lots of plants,
i will only save any if my friends want them, mind you i have 3 females who give birth at the same time :S ,
so thats a lot of em in one go :hyper: .

Right now in the 10 Gal I have two black skirted tetras, one molly, a loach and 5 platies.... so either the fry are platyxmolly or just platy. That's what I was going to put into the 25 gal. I would get a bigger one but at the moment I still live at home and don't want to overrun my parents with big tanks.

Thanks for the info, I will keep the babies in the 10 gal, it just really needs a good clean and I have to be careful.

hi again,
im sure your fry are platy,i dont think mollie mate with platy,i was just thinking your fry would need to be about 2-3 months old b4 a fish shop would take them,by then you could have 3 more batches, how many female platy do you have?, do you know which one had fry?,could all your females be pregnant?,one of my females gives birth every 4 weeks without having to mate with the sperm shes stored up over 4 months ago.
may be you could ask your local fish shop see if they want a supply,or friends, also you could try the buy sell swap section on this forum, hope this helps, donna :) .

Well, I to answer some questions.

I have been told that mollys and platies can mate with each other. I have one male molly, one male platy and a female platy to match him, two more females that are a match and one other female that is an albino yellow platy. I have no idea who the mother is. I have a few babies that look like the two male/female matched platies.

I will just have to take the blessings as they are and deal with all the babies as they come.

Thanks

To help out keeping your tank heathy I would look to rehome the 2 tetras, they really need to be in groups of 6+. Also what type of loach do you have? Most of them really like groups of 3 or more. If you rehomed the tetras and loach you would have a little more wiggle room in there untill you can get a bigger tank.

Molly and platy cannot mate, as they are not the same genus. Platies and swordtails can (and frequently do), mollies and guppies allegedly can but it is rare, guppies and endlers do it without a second thought.

Thanks for that info, it makes so much sense. So then I see that mollys and guppys can mate.

But this won't necessarily mean that they will; most of the time they don't.
