Hi

One of my platties has Fin Rot and I noticed this morning that my YoYo Loaches have been picking on her and have caused other injuries, probably because she can't get away very quickly now.

i treated the tank with Interpet's Fin Rot treatment last Thursday but she doesn't look any better and now that she has other wounds I would like to use Melafix because I've read it helps when fish have healing wounds.

Question is do i need to wait for the other treatment to finish before doing my water change and using Melafix or can i do it now

Fish in question is now safely nestled in our nursery away from any more attcaks.

Hi and welcome to the forum :)

Fin rot is normally caused by a dirty tank and poor water quality that allows disease organisms to infect the fish and damage the fins. The best way to treat it is by doing a 75% water change and gravel cleaning the substrate every day for a week or two. The big water changes dilute any nutrients and pathogens in the water, and this lets the fish heal up and recover.

You can also add rock salt at a dose of 2 heaped tablespoons per 20 litres of water. Keep the salt in there for 2-4 weeks. The salt kills a lot of disease organisms and helps the fish recover.

---------------------
If you have a medication in the tank (eg: Melafix), you need to do a couple of big (75-80%) water changes and gravel clean the substrate before using a different medication.

All medications harm the fish to a degree and mixing medications is a quick way to kill everything in the tank.

---------------------
If you can post some pictures of the sick fish, we can check it and see what it has and what if any medication it needs. Quite often small wounds will heal by themselves if the tank is clean and the fish is well fed.

Think of it this way, if you scratch or cut your finger, or graze a knee falling off your bike, you don't go to the doctors and get put on anti-biotics. Animals, including fish are the same. They have a good immune system and can usually recover from most ailments if they are kept in clean water and fed well.

I agree
Get several 25% waterchanges done daily is ok
Get the water tested assuming all is ok do a course of esha 2000 I have had great success with this over the years

But only add eSHa 2000 if the fish definitely have a disease which can be treated by that medication. Daily water chnages for a couple of weeks often solve problems. Meds are only needed if the water changes don't solve it or if the fish gets worse even with daily water changes.
