Hi All

I recently discovered 1 surviving platy fry. At first I panicked and put her into my old 5 gallon tank. I then decided she might be lonely so I bought a breeding tank and moved it into the main tank.

The problem I have it that I bought 2 more females platies (Bumble and Crumb) and I think bumble is pregnant and Silver Lady (mother of surviving fry). I had thought it would be fine to put both Silver and Bumble in the breeding tank but my fry keeps swimming through the slats that is meant to keep fry and mother separate.

I think the fry is around 2.5 weeks old. What age will she be able to join the fish in the main area of thetank.

I have a 130 litre tank containing

4 glowlight tetras
3 guppies
5 platies

Thanks

I am not sure, but I think it is okay to add him back to the main tank when he is about 1.5-2 cm long. Providing that you have plenty of cover for him to hide.

Someone with a little more knowledge about this than me will let you know if I am right or not.

Thanks for responding FHM

Got 3 plants in the tank but that is it at the moment, thinking of getting an ornament or terracota pot soon, that may provide a bit more shelter. Just hope my females dont pop before I have had a chance to get them. :)

At 1.5 to 2 cm the cover does not need to be very dense.

Hi old man

I think she may only be about 1.0 cm. Not sure how fast they grow though.

Also I have been feeding her a tiny amount of liquifry 3/4 times a day but it is not getting eaten and the food is settling on the base of the breeding trap. Do I need to clean it out somehow or shall I just reduce her feeds to once a day.

Thanks

I have not used liquifry in the last 30 years so I really don't remember. A platy fry can easily eat flake food crushed between your finger tips. Clean out the trap and use just a light dusting, maybe one flake, of crushed flake food. If the fry is 1 cm long, it should be able to grow to 2 cm in the next 2 weeks if fed properly. If you have any microworms or BBS they will both help the little guy grow faster than prepared foods but should not be fed exclusively.

Excuse my ignorance old man but what is BBS and is microworm something live (cause I am a bit sqeamish) can just about manage to give my other fish bloodworm in jelly

BBS is baby brine shrimp. You hatch them yourself from eggs you get at the local fish shop. The day they hatch you feed them to the fish.
Microworms are really nematodes that you grow on a cereal culture medium. When they are ready to harvest they look like this. They are the tiny white things on the side of the container.
