Hello all,

I'm currently doing a fishless cycle of my first tank so no plants as yet, but I'm doing my homework.

I've been looking around for some nice little caves for my fish, when I came across coconut shells and noticed that you can buy them with plants growing on them such as here: ebay linkie

I'd probably be quite happy to pay that price if I had to, but since I've got time to waste, I was wondering if anyone could give me some advice on coming up with something like this myself? Is it something that would be easy enough for a newbie to achieve? I'm not a massive fan of the java moss if I'm honest, but would it be reasonably easy to do it with some other carpet/foreground plant? I've seen mentions online that you can make plants grow on things by simply tying them on with a piece of cotton. Is this the best way of going about it, and how would I tie something to a round coconut shell?

Finally, is it necessary to shell out (haha) for some coconut shells intended for this use, or am I better off just buying some coconuts and hollowing them out myself?

And you get the satisfaction that you made it yourself :good:

Its cost me a £1 to get to this stage :D

Christmas moss would be better than Java as it is 'neater' If wanting to add other plants then drill a few holes in the shell and tie them to it using fishing line or cotton thread. :)
