Hey all:

I'm in the process of converting my 55-gallon into a discus tank and have been reading thoroughly on the subject. One thing I'd like to know more of is good plants for them.

I saw an image of someone's tank here on TFF and can't find it now. But it had a nice rank of plants off in one corner. Rooted to the substrate, and single shafts running up (with leaves all at the top of the water column). Very nice shady refuge but because of the staks, still easily able to view all the discus. Any ideas on that in particular?

Anyway, I'm looking for suggestions and pics. I have a couple-three weeks to work on it before I get fish. I've done some searching here and haven't had much look seeing pics.

Also, I saw this when searching through Google, and wondered if anyone here knows what that gorgeous bed of mossy looking plants covering the bottom is, and what type of substrate it grows best on. It's simply a stunning tank!

Thanks in advance!

I dont know what plant that would be but i find that valsneria and chain swords do very well in discus setups. just be carefull to do your research on what plants can work because most plants will melt in the high temps that discus requirer. Here is a pic of my 55 gallon discus tank.

Thanks, Mark. It's the plants in the bottom photograph on the right of your tank I was talking about in my post. I've been looking at your journal about discus, so that must be where I came across the photo. I stumbled upon a discus site that includes a list of about 15 plants that do well in a discus tank, but there are no pictures and I was a little too lazy to copy and paste each plant into Google to see what they looked like.

What is the plant in question in your tank with the orange discus under it, Mark?

With the help of my lovely wife, who thought she recognized the ground cover plants in the tank pic I posted, it looks like it's Riccia fluitans. I could definitely craft a lovely tank with that for ground cover, some driftwood, a bit of fern on the wood, and the plant specified in Mark's pic.

Hmmmmm.

Although that is definitely a stunner, lanho, the image I'd seen and mentioned at the start of the thread with the specific plant I was looking for was the second image Mark posted of one of his tanks.

One of the things I like most about the sample image I posted to start the thread is that most of the rear wall of the tank is left alone, with only a few plants growing against it in one corner. It really gives the impression of space, as though you're looking at the bottom of a river backwater shore and it keeps going in the distance.
