Planting A Vertical Pond

I have an established vertical pond. I am wanting to plant this up with some marginal plants, but I didnt install any shelves. I dont like the look of the floating plant pots and I have tried hanging a plant trough with heavy duty fish line, but that didnt hold.
Does anybody have any ideas on how to place some marginals just below the surface
