I have some plants ( long grass-like) and they are TOO long for my tanks because they comeout of the water and there is room to cut off about 6 inches if i wanted to. but how do i do this without compermising the health of the plant? only half of the leaves are sticking out of the tank and the others are fine . so do i take the tall peices off compleetly of just chop em down? thanks alot

If you are talking about vallisneria, then I'd recommend something different that most people. I just pluck off the long leaves and wait for the shorter leaves to take it's place. Works great because I never have to worry about the leaf, since it's not there anymore to grow.

If it is Val, then I always cut it... just like giving it a hair cut. I cut a small group at a time so you dont get this very obvious line.

I have loads of Vallis in my tank and I regularly chop them to just below the water level. Doesnt seem to harm them in any way. Use a pair of sharp scissors otherwise the tips tend to rot.
