Hi,

I have an electrician coming around tomorrow and my electricity will be out for a few hours 3 - 4max, is there anything I can do to ensure minimal problems?

thanks

I would stop by a store to see if you can get a battery pack to plug the airator too - - other than that you should be fine - just for that short amount of time, oxygenating the water should be enough IMO

Dont worry about the temperature, it should drop slowly and shouldnt affect the fish. Your main concern would be the filter....

they turned my electricity off for a few hours once, and all the fish were fine.

cheers :good:

You shouldn't have any problems at all. Water holds temperature very well so you should not see much of a temp rise or drop in 3 or 4 hours. The bacteria should be fine too. The one exception to that is if you have bio-wheel filters. On those, the wheel, which is where a large amount of your bacteria is, can easily dry out in that time frame so you would need to take precautions to make sure that doesn't happen.

thanks for all the replies, I've got a fluval u2 filter and the internal juwel filter so hoping most of the bacteria will be alright for a few hours.

I turned my external filter off to do a water change once and realised it the next day and everything was fine - didnt even have a small spike!

I did that once too when feeding, I have an external heater which relies on the filter running...next morning the temp had dropped to 22C when the norm at the time was 27C...all my fish were fine even then - although I did cr4p myself when I realised what I'd done...

A guy I work with had no electricity for almost 24 hours and he only lost one fish.

Fish are hardier than we think they are; try not to worry :). I'd have thought it would be fine for a few hours.

Got home last night, we had a guy in to fit a shower. When he put the lecky back on the filter didn't re-start, so I got home from work at 5.30 to find no filter working. Got the impeller going again and did a 50% water change. Fish all happy again. I did panic though.

in future (this is for eveyone) just ask the sparky to make a temp socket just for the tank it wont take him 2 minutes to do and it saves headaches (i used to be a sparky)

i lost my power for 16 hours this week and all was fine. just did a 50% water change when power came back to help the bacteria out. no problems.
