Piranha Lighting.

Does anything know if aqurium lighting is appropreiate for piranhas?

1. I have a florsent light housed in the lid for the tank is this ok?
2. Should I be running this 24hrs a day?

No the light should not be on 24 hours a day, fish need day and night cycles the same as every other living creature and 24 hour lighting will put a lot of stress on the fish.

Piranha preffer dim tanks so its best to only put the light on when you want to watch the fish, unless you have live plants which need the lights on all day.

as said, you need dim lighting for piranha's.bright aquarium lights are the reason for them becoming slightly timid in aquariums. Im pretty sure you can find lighting for piranha's, type it in on google

It's best to not use lighting with Piranhas.

Their eyes (pupils) can't contract to diminish the amount of light as they live in murky waters in their natural habitat and never needed to.

If you MUST use lighting try only on half of the tank or wrapping electrical tape around it in a way to allow it to not be so bright and only leave it on for 4-6 hours at most. Floating plants at the top would be ideal also. (Plastic ones) They will be stressed and skittish anytime there is a bright light on them so try not to very often if possible.

I have lights and once in a great while I will turn it on but in almost 20 years of keeping piranhas I would say as a guestimate that I haven't turned an aquarium light on for them more than 50 times.
