now i've learnt how to put an image up on here, here's a second go at hoping your knowledge can identify what was found in tank. the largest was only about 10mm long. smallest was probably about 5mm. 2 mentions have been damselfly and dragonfly larvae. had a look online and there seems to be a few differences. whether that is due to age is something i don't know. i did also fish out what might be a tiny egg sac. it was only about 3 or 4 mm in diameter made of a jellylike substance and had pin head size bits inside. any ideas?

Damselfly nymph, I think. Even if it is another flying bug, it is definitely a fish eater. Toss it into a pond or something, but don't let it near your tanks.

The 'egg sac' you describe sounds like snails eggs.
thanks Gilli, have been getting some small snails. did a 50% water change yesterday and had a good search and destroy session with them. no doubt there will still be some. plan to do a total cleanse of tank at some point

KittyKat has provided the correct ID of that darned thing. I never have seen one in a tank but find they are not too uncommon in my outdoors summer tub.
