i just found out why i've been having these mystery deaths in my office tank,ph shock my tanks ph is 6 and thats w/out driftwood and ph drops,i told the lfs guy that i use bottled (water cooler jugs)of water for water changes and he said spring would be ok but that "pure water"is softer.i don't exactly know what he meant by pure water but i use deer park.
anyway the point of this thread is test your water.
so far i lost a total of 6 s.algea eaters
2 colombian red/blue tetras
3 gouramis and a few others.

Maybe 'distilled' water. I recently read it's not good for tanks unless mixed with tap water or something else to raise the KH.

I had the same prob., my tap is alkaline, but very, very soft. I'm pretty sure the fish I lost a few years ago was due to the pH crashing.

Adding crushed coral to filter seems to have done the trick for me. :)
