To reiterate...do not attempt any adjustment of the pH if fish are in the tank. Never. Store staff seem very quick to sell pH regulator this or that, but these almost always cause serious issues for fish, and on top of cycling can be deadly.

The pH is what it is in the tap water and the tank water (different tanks) because of the way pH is connected to the GH, KH, CO2, etc. The natural laws of chemistry and biology factor in. Leave the pH alone, the fish will be better and more easily deal with cycling.

A word on testing pH...when testing tap water for pH, let a glass of water sit 24 hours then test; the result will be more accurate. Not needed with tank water (unless just filled).

What is the GH and KH of the tap water? This directly impacts the pH. IF pH adjustment were needed down the road, it must first consider the GH and KH which serve to determine and buffer the pH. Not suggesting pH adjustment is needed, just mentioning that these parameters are interconnected and adjusting any one of them must take into account the others which are part of the picture.
