Whilst a marketplace exists, this sort of cruelty will always occur

Gone are the days where people just enjoyed what nature gives us. Fish, like everything else from dogs to designer handbags, are being bred/manufactured in more extravagant designs, colours and looks.

Oneupmanship, the desire for something different....call it whatever you want to.

It has happened for decades....Betta started in two colourways....red or blue.....40-50 years ago. They were new and exotic back then...and they were beautiful, had long disease free lives. Same with Gourami, Cichlids etc....beautiful naturally coloured fish.

But that was never going to be good enough and as with virtually every fish available for the home aquarium, humans have tinkered, messed, experimented to breed bigger, brighter, more finnage, shorter bodies, fatter bodies.....

Oneupmanship for the breeders "I can make my fish better than yours, and get MORE MONEY!!"

They care not for the fish
They care not for the LFS selling the fish
They care not for the customer

They ONLY care about how much money they can earn per fish and how much they can change the fish to et even more money.

Stop buying these genetically modified, overbred fish.
Stop buying the illegally injected fish.

Fish should be as nature provided, full of exquisite colours that shimmer. They should live long lives without being loaded with medications.

Take away the marketplace for these designer fish. It's not that difficult especially if countries ban their import, which will ONLY happen if we, the TRUE fishkeepers, lobby for it and make it happen.

But, as with alot of things, true fishkeepers as like others.......lip service makes us feel better but it never changes anything.

If a breeder can prove a bloodline is pure and not modified in any way.

Every animal has a bloodline, if you breed commercially (as in to sell) a bloodline record should be made mandatory. That way fish, as every pure bred animal, would have a record of everything.

Currently I seriously doubt there are any fish that are available for the home aquarium that have not had mutations or modifications made by human intervention.
