I noticed this aint on the index.....be nice if it was added so people know what it is. I'm finding it hard to get information about the perruno, I know the basic stuff general care, size etc but its always better to be able to find out as much as you can incase you need it for future reference. The one we have bought is 14" but it wont be leaving the aquatics till 4 weeks or so and thats give me a bit ov time to do my homework ! lol any feedback from peeps would be appreciated Mary :hey:

Obviously it requires a large tank but also a very good filter because they have a huge appetite and can produce alot of c**p. Its is a severe predator that is best kept with large cichlids like oscars or large characins like leporinus over 4" to 6".

A carnivore that needs meat fish and live foods. Specimens can reach 20" in length.

mine reached 16" and had a 5 footer to its self because it tried to eat anything that went in the tank even my hand :( .

True Perrunichthys perruno are extreemly rare in the trade, Planet catfish doesnt even have a picture they are that rare, the fish that is usually sold as a perruno catfish is actually Leiarius longibarbus, a gigantic fish that can easily reach 30 inches in length and requires a tank in the region of 10x3x3 feet when full grown. Like all pimeloids any fish that fits into the mouth will be eaten, which in this case means no tankmates under 8 inches.

Hi Mad duff.....i know about the tank it is going in a 6ft x 2ft x 2ft with my Arowana. We were told this catfish will grow 25" to 26". Filtration will be very good, we will be using an external filter/heater. Its more its origin etc i m looking for information on plus storys from owners ov these catfish will also be useful. Do u still have yours?? If yes have you got any photographs you could let me see? thanks Mary :)

Hi cfc...well no doubt Jay will upgrade as u know he is wanting bigger and better all the time! he is crafty how he works it thou lol...will also enquire with wharf if this is a Leiarius longibarbus. Sounds like its metal gloves required when putting hands in our tank:( The only tankmate that will be in the same tank is our Arowana.

Hi Mary, I had mine about 10 years ago and I had to give it to somebody who had the time and space for it a few years ago :( . I dont have any photos of it at all as alot of my photos were lost when I moved house seven years ago.

As CFC wrote there is alot of debate about the perruno catfish as the early specimens were recorded as having 8 rays in the dorsal whereas alot of Perruno's sold now have 11 which would make them Leiarius species.

The most common of the Leiarius species to be sold as perruno's are:

Leiarius Pictus
Leiarius Marmoratus
Leiarius Longibarbus

Looking at pictures in books now I think mine could possibly have been Leiarius Marmoratus as it is almost identical.

I know David Sands wrote in his Catfishes of the world thatfuture investagation could prove the species Perrunichthys to actually belong to the genus Leiarius.

As for origins they all come from around about the same places South America: Peru, Brazil and Venezuela.

Hope this helps

Yes it does help. Thanks...also i agree with what CFC says and will get the scientific name and look up pics to find out what species matches pics ov the one we own. I think it could be the Leiarius Longibarbis i ve been looking threw different websites since my previous post just shows u "just because u buy something black and they say its black dont mean it really is black ! " lol

Leiarius mamoratus and Leiarius longibarbus are names for the same fish, L.longibarbus has been recognised by scientists as being the original and therefore true name for the fish previously known as L.mamoratus.

OMG CFC i just remembered how to spell the last name hahahaha Leiarius Longibarbis.....lmao glad i got it right eventually :p

Well ! after lots ov is it or isnt it...IT IS !...wharf have confirmed that the perruno catfish they are keeping for us IS the real thing....it has 8 rays on its dorsal :hey: Until a few days ago we just came to thinking it was a longibarbis BUT after messages from locals who are very keen fish keepers and use the same aquatics as us our minds changed. This couple, who keep longibarbis, answered Jays questions on planet catfish said that there was a true perruno in Wharf..and guess what IT'S OURS ! :hyper: gawd i m so happy! Jay poped into Wharf today to double check and rang me about 30 minutes ago jumping lol becasue it is hahaha

Come to The aquatic Habitat @ Brockworth, Gloucestershire and get yourself a 2ft Leiarius mamoratus for £49.... You know you want it! It would make great friends with your perruno! :p

If not i will have to continue to force it apon people like CFC..

Ben

Well, now i am moving house to a property with a 207 square foot fish house already built (it just needs some converting from a workshop) i may be able to do something in the future when i start to install more large tanks if it still hasnt sold

At this rate i doubt it, particularly as we have been reccomending 6x2x2 ABSOLUTE minimum, which most people dont have.

Obviously if you do want it CFC you can have it for a good price, and i'd love to have a chin-wag with ya.

Thought i 'd add some information i have found about the Perrunichthys perruno we have.......
An elongated catfish with a heavily forked tail. The dorsal fin stands tall when erect. A long pair of barbels extends from the upper jaw and two smaller pairs are located on the lower jaw. The body color is made up of dark brown, round splotches with thin, light brown markings between. The flanks have the same pattern. It has 8 rays on it's dorsal fin, where as the Leiarius has 11 .
SIZE: To 24" (60 cm)
SS: The False Perrunichthys ( Leiarius marmoratus) is very similar, but easily distinguishable by its lesser amount of dorsal rays and rounded head.
HAB: South America; tributaries of, and in the Rio Negro (Southern Venezuela and Brazil).
S: bottom
TANK: 72" (183 cm) or 100 or more gallons (378 L). Leave large open swimming areas. Use a powerful filter that provides a moderate current and is able to handle the waste of this fish. Provide large rock shelters and caves that will not collapse when bumped by this catfish. If plants are used, they should be large, robust, and well-rooted ones. Use a cover of floating plants to diffuse the lighting.
WATER: pH 5.8-7.5 (6.5), 1-15 dH (7), 72-79°F (22-26°C)
SB: A large, nocturnal predator that will eat any swallow able tank mates. Combine with larger fish.
SC: Large cichlids, large characins, Arowana, large loricarids
FOOD: Live; fish, earthworms, crabs; occasionally tablets; chopped meat. Like other large, predatory catfish, once mature, this fish should be fed only two or three times a week.
SEX: Unknown-possibly males are more slender than females.
B: Unknown
BP: 10. Spawning has not been recorded in captivity.
R: Frequent water changes are necessary because of the large volume of waste this fish will produce. This fish can attain a length of over 12" (30 cm) in its first year.
DC: 7. A large, predatory catfish that must be fed live foods.
