I've got a 40 breeder currently cycling. I'm planning on adding an in-line CO2 injection system. The tank was originally going to be for some GBR's and either rummy nose or cardinal tetras but, I added a lot of seiryu stone without realizing it would raise my PH so much, so now i'm thinking of going for a community tank with 30-ish white cloud mountain minnow (golden or regular) and about 6 pearl gouramis, with some pygmy corydoras and maybe neocaridina shrimp (If they survive). My main concern is that I don't want minnow fry and i'm hoping the gouramis will take care of that for me. I'd like to hear ideas and maybe some tips to help me out.

The main problem is temperature. Pearl gouramis like it warmer (24 to 30 deg C) than white clouds (14 to 22 deg C)

Pygmy cories and shrimps prefer temperature between the two.

i didn’t even realize the temperature requirements, i must have overlooked that accidentally. how would you personally stock this tank? i wanted some school fish w a few centerpiece fish and some cleaners but i’m all out of ideas, since i’m pretty picky w fish.

Are there any species of shoaling fish other than white clouds which you like? Those are the problem as they are temperate fish rather than tropical and there is more choice replacing the white clouds than finding fish which are also temperate.

well i’m not too sure, i’d like to know ones that would do well and then pick and choose from there. i do like sparkling gouramis but i believe different types of gouramis can be w one another. but yeah if you had any ideas of what would do great i’m open to suggestions!

do you think a school of CPD’s would work well with the pearl gouramis?? maybe with a couple of sparkling gouramis sprinkled in there too?

It is always difficult to suggest fish as there are so many of them and everyone has different preferences. One thing you could do is take a trip round all your local stores, make a note of the species which catch your eye, then look them up on Seriously Fish to see which ones have similar requirements.
In case you haven't found it yet:

Cpds are very shy fish and could well be intimidated by larger fish like pearl gouramis. I've not kept them together myself but other members may have done.
I'm not sure about pearls and sparkling gouramis. Seriously Fish does recommend small tankmates as they are easily intimidated.

I have pearl gouramis, but you'd probably find their tankmates a bit boring - harlequin rasboras, a few elderly espe's raboras (last of their shoal) and cherry barbs.

hmm that makes sense, i also read online somewhere that the barbs and gouramis shouldn’t get along, being that gouramis are sedate fish and can be aggressive towards the very active cherry barbs, but if you’ve kept them with luck i’m not too against the idea of a school of cherry barbs and a few pearl gouramis. if i were to potentially change my centerpiece fish instead of a gourami what else would you recommend? i originally wanted GBR’s being that they’re one of my fav fish, but my ph got to high due to the seiryu stone lol

Cherry barbs are not very active fish compared to other barb species. Mine are in a tank with a 42 x 18 inch footprint and they don't dash around; they are no more active than the harlequins. They do seem to spend a lot of time on the bottom of the tank searching for bits of food :)

okay cool! i might consider getting cherry barbs for the tank then! what else would you put in a tank with cherry barbs (if the pearl gouramis weren’t in the tank)

Gouramis are fine with cherry barbs, but if you'd rather something else, it depends on your preferences. Just because I like certain fish doesn't mean you'll like them as well :) That's why I suggested seeing what your local shops stock, research the ones you like and get those which work together and with your water (GH, pH, temperature etc)

well to be completely honest all the fish i like are all fish that like PH levels under 7 lol, so it’s kinda tricky finding something that would do well in the tank, but yeah i’ll look around! i appreciate your help and time

Medaka for the top third.
WCMMs for the middle third.
Cherry Barbs for the bottom third.

If the tanks big enough and water hard enough etc.

what temp would you recommend keeping the tank at then? both the WCMM’s and the Medaka’s do well below 70’s and mid to high 60’s but the cherry barbs like it warmer like 70’s-80’s right?
