My next set of fish i'm thinking of getting to go with my platies are 3 Pearl Gourami what will it be best getting 1 male and 2 females? or three females as i have been told females are not as aggressive?

John

three females would be reccomended rather than 2 f and 1 m as females are supposed to outnumber males 3 to 1
females are definatly not as agrresive as males

Thank's :)

How do i tell the difference between m & f as i read you can't until there are breading? as the male will get a red breast is the true?

John

The male wil havelong rays coming from his under fin, have an orange chest andwill have a longer dorsal fin. Females are fatter and duler and had rounded or triangle dorsal fins.

yeh its true you can still tell even when not breeding but it will be more faint

warning females will have a bit of red on the start of there feelers so dont get them confused

My male is orange most of the time the females are silverry

When they are young it's hard to tell them apart by coloration. When you're at the lfs, try to compare the length of their dorsal fins. If some are shorter than others, chances are they are the females. Unless you plan to try to breed them, I would suggest sticking to females too. They are lovely fish and the males can get quite aggressive. The only real difference in color is that males get that red breast.

I hope this thread might help you.:)

Thank's for your help :) been reading up on them all morning and did noticed that females have a smaller dorsal fin, comparing photo's. Not getting them until about a month so will have plenty of time to read as much information about them.

This is a new one on me as I've kept pearl gouramis for over 20 years and have never, ever had an aggressive male! Usually keep two x trios of pearls. They are beautiful and the most peaceful of the gouramis. Golds and blues are the aggressive ones in my experience.

I have 3. 1 male and 2 female. He is being really aggressive at the moment and I was wondering whether this is normal behaviour. Would getting another female chill him out?

The tank is planted, but would more plants help?

Hope I haven't stolen your thread John, but I reckon it'd help you too :good:

More plnats = more places for the other f ish to hide. I have agresive male pearl gouramis I had to split them up bcause they were very nasty to each other.

I have 2 female pearl gouramis and 1 male and i have had no problems with mine at all, but we did have 2 female moonlight gouramis and we had to take them back as they were very aggressive to each other and my other fish.

Now i have the two females pearls added last week and four honey gouramis just added them this week and seems to be ok up to now :) I did get a 3 spot gourami as the Pets@Home said it was a lace and will happly live with the pearls lol. So the 3 spot went back for a complaint. I can't tell you what sex are the honeys as all look the same so might be the same sex? but they are always together and seems to be enjoying each other company.
