Also known as a "Freddy Cichlid". I picked one up yesterday. Here is a pic:

She is in with a Rotkeil, Blue Acara, and Tinfoils. No problems with the Rotkeil but the Acara is being a brat lately, he is harassing both the Rotkeil and Fred. He is about 1/4 the size of the Rotkeil ! This just started a couple weeks ago and he used to be shy ....not sure why this is. He tried lip locking with Fred and Fred grabbed him by the head and spit him across the tank. No harm done and the others just try to ignore him but I'm afraid he may push things too far. I did notice that the fish food I bought says "promotes breeding". No idea what is in it to do that but could this be the reason ?

THink ... a slightly smaller, and perhaps slightly less aggresive version of a jaguar cichlid and that gives a good idea of the freidrichstalii.

As you are getting your fish together as small ones, they should be OK together as they grow, but a settled adult male freddy will not be very tolerant at all of newcomers in it's territory, or anyone challenging him.

i have owned one of these and this little #28### was the nastiest in the tank bar far will not tolerate nothing in its space and mine was female

Thank you. So far it is docile but doesn't want anyone in its cave. Maybe I should move the Acara to my 75. Do ya think it could be the food because the Acara started behaving that way around the same time I started feeding the new flake.

The Freddy will not eat the flake. Is it safe to feed bloodworm and brine shrimp say twice per week ? I think it wants meaty food. I typically do not feed frozen but every once in while.

you can feed them anything really there not really a fussy eater bloodworm and doramin is what i used to feed mine and the odd earthworm (messy job) but wouldnt be keeping it with any of your stocklist mate its a highly predatory fish and very territorial fish

but try its main diet with tetra doramin

It should be okay with the Tinfoils and Pleco, right ? Possibly the Rotkeil ? It is a 6ft. tank. Boo-Hoo....suppose I need to start re-homing the fish in my 75 gal. I'm bored with it anyhow.

In Daytona Beach at Poiseidon.

He died :(

Must have been bacterial....no visible symptoms. Was why he wasn't eating I suppose. I'm really bummed.
