Out Of Control Amazon Sword

I have an amazon sword that had completely outgrown my 10 gallon tank.  Can I separate some of it to leave in the 10 gallon and put some of it in my 55 gallon?  The 55 gallon is my cichlid tank with sand substrate...will my plant survive there?

I've not tried to seperate them but you could try. Sand substrate is no problem. My swords too have grown really big - I've got one with two flower stalks at the moment
