Hi. I have read on other forums that Oscars should not live in ones as you don't get a true Oscar that way ???? I have a juvenile Red Oscar with 3 clown loach and three BN plecs and when I get my 125 gallon tank in August I hope to add three Silver Dollars as well. Im sure that the stocking will be fine as I will also have a large sump on the 125 gallon tank. My question is really what is everyones opinion on keeping a solitary Oscar as opposed to growing on a pair ?

I don't like to keep any fish on its own (unless its a 'special fish' that can't be trusted with tankmates eg. wolffish), but it doesn't have to be a pair. Oscars will be quite content solitary, though I think tankmates give them added interaction and stimulus.

Having a pair of oscars requires alot of work and space. To get a pair you would need at least a 180G tank for six juve's to grow in and finally if two did pair off, you would need to be careful with tankmates as if they did mate, they would have a good chance of killing any tankmates to protect their eggs/young.

The use of stimulus as shroob mentioned would be a good idea as the fish can get bored like most other animals, especially when in a tank with no other specialized fish as himself to face off with or contest

Thanks for the replies. I have had Oscars before, but that was a breeding pair. I lost the female aged 9 years old and the male was a little younger, but I believe he pined for his lost partner and he went within the year of losing her. Its just never having a had a single Oscar with other tank mates, I wasn't at all sure.

Oh dear, I'm sorry to read that eskcarr. But yes an Oscar will eat anything that fits in his mouth, So I know I need to be careful regarding tank mates.
