Well i just discovered that oscars dont take kindly to being poked and prodded about. On arriving home today i found one of my oscars laying on the bottom of the tank, breathing rapidly and with a huge abdominal swelling that wasnt there the day before. On closer inspection i saw several clear sharp looking splinters protruding from the oscars anus, presumably fish bones from the last feed of white bait two days previously.
I decided to net the fish out and after placing the fish in a tray of water and covering its head with a wet towel removed the splinters with a pair of plastic tweezers, then after some gentle squeezing another 5 or 6 splinters became visable which i also removed, this process took only a few minutes.
I then put the oscar into a large holding net within the tank it came from where it swam down and sat on the bottom, then a few minutes later it suddenly had a violent siezure and dropped dead in front of me
I dont know what could have been done differently here and have no idea why the small bones would have caused such a blockage when fish are a regular part of their diet, i guess its just one of those things.

Awww so sorry to hear that. That is strange. Maybe the Oscar had an underlying problem that caused this to happen. Does seem an odd thing tho.
