hiya everyone, newbie here first forum ive joined so be gentle with me.anyway i bought an aqua one horizon a few months ago and have really enjoyed setting the tank up and looking after the fish adding bits and pieces here and there been an absolute joy, and to my amazement the wife said wouldn't it be nice to have a tank in the living room(aqua one in the dining room) we could go halves each for christmas BLIMEY i thought, so have been looking about for something else. looked at the juwel vision 180,just got outbid by a fiver on a popular auction site not to worry because kept looking and came across the osaka 155 very similar set up to the horizon and thought WOW thats a really nice tank. so i have been surfing this site and people have been mentioning the probs with open top tanks with varying answers, using perspex, condensation trays and the like. well here comes the questions firstly what is everyones opinion of this tank and would it be possible to aquaseal supporting pieces of glass on the rim to hold two sliding glass pieces cut and rounded to fit as i havent read of anyone doing this and thought this would be a good idea.many thanks in anticipation of your answers, cheers bizzi

personally i would always go for a more traditional rectangular tank (like the Vision, or Rio range).
When it comes to *most* common tropical fish, width is far more important than height.

I dont see any issues with your DIY, but sounds like a chore to me.

I guess my question to you would be what sort of fish were you thinking of keeping?

Oh and welcome to the forum!

thanks for the quick reply and the welcome,i was thinking along the lines of angel fish or discus for this tank was going to post something for the suitability of fish for this tank not sure probably should pick the fish first then look for a tank but hey im a newbie. any recommendations for this tank would be welcome thanks again bizzi

Alright then. Angels and discus do need a bit of head-space, but i would research them a bit more. Both can get large and like to be in groups. I wouldn't have thought that tank is big enough (please let someone else confirm that - i have no experience of either fish)

Hello and welcome to TFF,
Whats your budget for your new tank?
As for angels and discus like T_B rightly said i would do some research especially discus, a lot involved with these beautys and are usually kept in a species tank.
Keep us posted, Skins.

Yes, just had a look myself and very stylish it is

The Osaka 155 should be OK for a few Angelfish but for Discus, I would get the Osaka 260. The Osaka 155 only has a width of 60cm, too little for Discus :look:

hiya thanks for your reply so a few angels would be good what we talking i know you need 3 or more so perhaps 5 could i put anything else in there a single pleco, any other suggestions or just stick to the angels????? yeh a osaka 260 would be brilliant but the budget wont stretch to one.lfs said he would price match a 155 from the internet and ive seen these for £284 so its in my budget osaka 260 £986 wayyyyy out unless i save like mad but were talking quite a long time down the road for that to happen, many thanks bizzi, but them discus sure are beautys!!!!!!!!

I love open top tanks, theres nothing wrong with them. If you're gonna plant your tank, an open top gives another veiwing angle. I have 1 open top tank and one closed and i'm thinking of making the closed top, open.

some of the best tanks in the world are open top tanks...

just been to the LFS with the wife and had another look at the osaka 155 really nice tank but dont think it is big enough :/,because i will only want something bigger down the line, unless i fill the house with various different tanks but a big nooooo  from the wife, personally i dont see a problem with this :D.looked at the rio 240 it will fit on my sideboard in the dining room and would be big enough as i cant get anything bigger in the house and as they say go as big as you can afford. oh my god what a dilema but a nice one. great video of the open top tanks more food for thought, blimey this fish keeping lark is hard work on the brain

i just picked up a rio 240 in tip top condition (2nd hand) for £200. I would strongly recommend a 2nd hand tank.

On that note, if you want a rio 180 i might be selling mine ;)

In a Osaka 155, you could fit around 5 Angelfish easily as its a tall tank. I've seen the Osaka 260 in my LFS a year ago for £450 inc. cabinet so I don't know where you got that crazy £986 from ????

even at 450 thats way over budget but it could even come down to a rio 180 but norwich is a bit far T_B ,but thanks for your input everyone, gonna make a descision after the christmas break cheers bizzi

I got the rio & its a nice size for my living room.

I cant have an open toped tank because I have two very young daughters so the aquarium would end up full of dolls, my little ponies & glitter
