I was just wondering if i need to have a tank cycled for a purely planted tank. (no fish) looking to get things growing while i wait for my other tank to be repaired..

+1.
Over time if the tank is successful and the plants are growing healthy, then you'll probably find that the tank will cycle on it's own. Any oxygen produced will help the nitrifying bacteria. As will potassium phosphate and trace elements. The metabollic waste that plants produce as a result of healthy growth is packed with carbon and will again, help nitrifying bacteria. Folks think its solely down to ammonia but it comes down to more than that.
